Mammoth Cave National Park

We went with my parents to Mammoth Cave National Park this weekend in south central Kentucky. If you are actually in your Chapters or Barnes and Noble, you can see a great picture in Life's magazine about the 100 most beautiful places in the world. This is one of them and after seeing it, it is indeed pretty amazing.

The park reminded us of Vancouver rainforests as it was extremely humid and the vegetation out in full force. The park has a beautiful "Tom Sawyer" river running through it and underground it is home to the longest cave in the world. They have mapped and discovered over 350 miles of linking caves made of limestone and they believe there are hundreds of more miles left unexplored.
You can take a variety of tours to see the Mammoth cave or some of the small caves surrounding it. We went on two, each lasting for over two hours. One contained a beautiful room entitles the Drapery room or Frozen Niagara which was amazing. The other was more rustic and involved carrying gas lanterns for lights. There was amazing formations, crickets, salamander, and bats.

Amazing experience with my parents and only about 3 1/2 hours from where we live. We were sad to see my parents go yesterday. On another note, it really does seem like our life out here is a series of hellos and goodbyes which involve a lot of airports and straining to see people as they either come or go through customs. It is hard at times.

Those caves are amazing! So beautiful and paculiar at the same time. How were you with the bats?

I was actually okay with the bats when we toured the caves. They were just hanging there. However, we watched some bats fly out of the cave at night and that was a bit freaky! They flew very close to our head!
