I have just finished reading The Glass Castle written by Jeanette Walls and greatly enjoyed it for the following reasons:
1) It is a true story and is written as an autobiography and in the first person. Sometimes that fact can make a book even more amazing.
2) It is an account of Jeanette's childhood with three siblings and parents. It is a great account of kids persevering though tough circumstances and developing an admirable ability to work hard and use self-determination skills. Everything in their life pointed to failure in adulthood yet it didn't. I think working with the community that I do professionally, I am sometimes swallowed up with a feeling of hopeless about some of these kid's future. Not only are they all facing tough learning differences but many come from circumstances that don't scream opportunities. I think that the book gave a glimpse into possibilities.
3) It is a really easy book to read. I found it addicting and finished it fast.
4) It is not written in a " I-had-a-horrible-childhood-feel-sorry-for-me" kind of way. It is really matter of fact.

That sounds like an amazing book! I'll be sure to add that to my "to-read" list! Only a few more pages left of Charles Dickens, then Geisha, then LIfe of Pi and the Harry Potter series. Gotta love reading. I had the best afternoon last week - I made some chai tea, put on some Jazz and read all afternoon! It was amazing!
Just read this book, it is completely amazing and eye opening. It's humbling to hear about people who have every right to feel sorry for themselves but refuse to when I whined about having to get out of bed early this morning..
I am glad others are feeling the same about the book. Now I need to find something else...
i'm reading it. i'm loving it!
I read that book this past summer and have re-read it twice since...so incredible! I think we all need to put lists out there of the books we're reading and books we have read and have loved to give others some ideas of where to go next.
I read it! It WAS awesome!!!
I am so glad that people are enjoying it. I am checking other lists for book ideas. Let me know if you have any that you really enjoy!
I would strongly recommend "great Expectations" by Dickens.
